Indonesia triumphs in Math and Science Olympiad

Jakarta Post, November 16, 2007

JAKARTA (JP): Host nation Indonesia recorded a remarkable achievement in the 2007 International Math and Science Olympiad for Primary Schools, winning six out of 11 gold medals on offer.

Indonesia also bagged eight silvers and 12 bronzes and was named Best Experiment and Best Overall in math and Best Theory in science in the competition, which began from Monday through Friday.

Four Indonesian students, Nicholas Tarino from Christian Elementary School SDK St. Maris in Tangerang, Chrysta Soetanto of SD Tirta Marta Jakarta, Steano Suryanto of SD Santa Theresia Jakarta, and Richard Akira from SD PL Bernardus in Central Java, won gold medals in math category at the 4th annual Olympiadorganized by the Ministry of Education of Indonesia.

Two other students, FX. Erick Estrada of SD Tunas Bangsa, West Kalimantan, and Winnie Jesslyn of SDS Soetomo I, Medan, North Sumatra, followed suit in science category.

Director General of Elementary and Secondary Schools at the Ministry, Suyanto, said he was very happy with the victory, which is far better than last year's one gold.

"This happens due to hard work and dedication of the trainers to prepare students tirelessly for the event," he said Friday.

135 delegation members from nine countries, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Srilanka, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Philippines participated in the Olympiad. (Kurniawan Hari)

HYMN OF THE MONTH

NUN DI BUKIT YANG JAUH/THE OLD RUGGED CROSS

Nun di bukit yang jauh, tampak kayu salib;
lambang kutuk nestapa, cela.
Salib itu tempat Tuhan Mahakudus
menebus umat manusia.

Refrein
Salib itu 'ku junjung penuh,
hingga tiba saat ajalku.
Salib itu 'ku rangkul teguh
dan mahkota kelak milikku.

'Ku setia tetap ikut jalan salib,
meski diriku pun dicela.
Satu saat kelak 'ku dibawa pergi
ke tempat kemuliaanNya.

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.

Refrain

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I’ll share.
